The Obama administration has announced that it will accept no more public input for a new federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing some of the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.
Fishing industry insiders have negotiated for months with officials at the Council on Environmental Quality and bureaucrats on the task force. These angling advocates have reportedly come to suspect that public input into the process was a charade from the beginning, according to an ESPN report.

The walleye stamp, though not necessary to catch and keep walleyes, is a way for anglers to voluntarily donate funds for walleye stocking. Proceeds from walleye stamp sales go directly to a special DNR account for walleye stocking activities.

[3/1/10] New state sportfishing regulations take effect March 1
The California Fish and Game Commission has made changes to state sportfishing regulations that will go into effect Monday.
Most have to do with fishing limits and procedures, but one will affect every angler in the state. Beginning Monday, anglers will no longer be required to wear their sportfishing license on outer clothing above the waist.
Spearheaded by Tom Raftican, founder and president of the Sportfishing Conservancy, the "No Wear Initiative" gained support from anglers frustrated with licenses getting lost or in the way when fishing.
"The effort is not designed to make enforcement more difficult, but make it easier to comply and reduce the number of lost licenses," said Raftican.
Anglers must still keep sportfishing licenses in their possession while fishing, and show it to Department of Fish and Game wardens if requested.

[2/17/10] Coho salmon offering signs for anglers this fishing season
The process for setting the salmon-fishing season begins next month, but news is already brewing about what anglers up and down the West Coast can expect this year.
While it is way too early to know exactly when anglers will be able to wet a line off the coast, the Oregon Production Index, which provides ocean-coho-abundance forecasts was released this past week.
The forecast calls for 556,000 coho to arrive off the Washington coast, compared to an actual return of more than 1.3 million (1.2 million was predicted) last year. Ilwaco, Pacific County, Westport in Grays Harbor County, La Push and Neah Bay in Clallam County experienced a banner coho fishing season last year.
"I'm not impressed by the forecast, but it isn't the end-of-the-world figures, and we've seen worse," said Doug Milward, a state Fish and Wildlife coastal-salmon manager. "I would expect coho fisheries like we saw in 2006 and 2007, which were OK seasons."
Milward did provide some good news to look forward to this summer off the coast.

[2/11/10] Cold weather and muddy water figure into tough Classic fishing
Situated southeast of Birmingham, Ala., Lay Lake is decidedly in the Deep South. But lately it's been more like the Deep Freeze.
The 2010 Bassmaster Classic is setting up to be one of the coldest Classics in the event's 40-year history. Fold recent rainfall into the mix -- and the muddy mess it has created on Lay Lake -- and you have a stiff challenge for the 51 anglers hoping to ascend to the throne of Classic champion.
"It's going to be a grind, no doubt," said Kevin VanDam, a two-time Classic champion and the reigning Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year. "The absolute toughest conditions are extremely cold and muddy water, especially a body of water where the water temperature is lower than normal.

Jumbo squid ink-jet their way to Newport Beach
Braedon Flynn got the text Friday from his friend Ryan Lawlor: Jumbo squid had invaded the waters off Newport Beach.
Flynn, a Newport Beach native who had been around fishing all his life, had never encountered the oversized creatures. Lawlor, who'd tangled with them a few years ago off San Diego, promised to call Flynn if the squid ever made it to Newport Beach.
So Flynn and Lawlor grabbed fishing rods Saturday night and jumped on a private boat with a third buddy, trailing a commercial vessel that was using sonar to locate the squid population.

[2/1/10] Look-alike fish may throw off white marlin count
Reporting from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - They are sleek, elusive predators, slipping through the deep violet of the ocean depths.
The challenge of catching white marlin has made them a prime target in fishing tournaments, with the winning catch at last summer's White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Md., reaping $903,442.
But it turns out many fish identified as white marlin were actually a recently discovered look-alike called the roundscale spearfish.
In fact, more than a quarter of the fish caught and identified as white marlin were roundscale spearfish, says a new study by scientists at the federal government, Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and other institutions. Their findings could call into question the government's decision to keep the white marlin off the endangered species list.

[1/28/10] Cox Retains Lead at FLW Bass Fishing Event on Lake Okeechobee
John Cox of Debary, Fla., caught a five-bass limit weighing 14 pounds, 2 ounces Friday to maintain his lead in the FLW Series Eastern Division tournament on Lake Okeechobee. With a three-day catch of 15 bass weighing 62-1, he holds a 10-pound, 11-ounce lead over his closest competitor, National Guard pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., heading into the final day of competition.
"Today was the first day I actually saw fish and didn't catch them," said Cox, who is fishing in his first FLW Series tournament. "I think that's because they were new fish. It was just rough. The first day they all ate it the first time they hit it. Yesterday they would hit it three or four times before they actually ate it and swam off the bed. Today they wouldn't pick it up at all."
Cox relied heavily on sight fishing the first three days of competition and thinks the fish he saw Friday were new fish on beds and were generally more hesitant to bite.
"I'm not a biologist or anything," Cox said. That's just what I like to think.
"Tomorrow I'm going to change it up," Cox added. "I've found an area that's got a ton of big fish cruising and I'm going to go in there and cast to them. If it's right, I might load the boat in a couple of hours."

[1/28/10] Rainbow smelt an ice fishing delight
Rainbow smelt are among Michigan's tastiest fish, and while most people associate smelt with dip nets and spring spawning runs in creeks, these little predators are a lot of fun on rods and reels for ice fishermen.
However, as Bob Stockton pointed out on a recent night of smelting on Higgins Lake, proper tackle and baiting techniques will significantly reduce the time it takes to fill a bucket with 50-60 fish that make a meal for three or four people.

[1/23/10] Legislators hear proposal to halt commercial bass fishing
It's illegal to catch any striped bass more than three miles from shore and inshore fishing could face a clampdown as well.
On Jan. 14, the state Legislature's joint committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture held a hearing on HD 245, a bill filed by Rep. Matt Patrick of Falmouth, that would ban commercial bass fishing in Massachusetts waters and limit recreational fishermen to one 20- to 26-inch bass per day.
"It's had a hearing. I don't know what the committee will do with it," Patrick said. "I'm not wedded to the language of the bill. I'm interested in starting a discussion in how to fend off another crash in the striped bass industry."

[1/23/10] Striped bass fishing ban appears dead
The author of a state bill to ban commercial striped bass fishing and severely limit recreational catches does not think it will go very far.
State Rep. Matt Patrick, D-Falmouth, said Tuesday that it was "highly unlikely" that his bill would make it out of the Joint Committee on the Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture.
"The language in the bill doesn't have a chance to pass as it is written," Patrick said. "I suggested to the committee that I was willing to compromise to make it viable."
Patrick said he was open to a limited commercial fishery.
The original bill banned the sale of striped bass in Massachusetts, and cut the number of fish recreational fishermen could keep from two to one per day. It also sought to protect fish between 26 and 40 inches in length, while allowing fishermen to keep fish as small as 20 inches. The current minimum size is 28 inches.

[1/21/10] Asian carp offer opportunity for entrepreneurs
Some entreprenuers say they've figured out how to control invasive Asian carp, which many fear could destroy the Great Lakes' $7 billion-a-year fishing industry by beating native fish in competition for food.
These businessmen suggest overfishing the Illinois River and other waterways for carp, which can be turned into food, fertilizer and other products. They say the only snag is they don't have the money to get their ventures going.

[1/9/10] New scientific fishing lure is breakthrough, researcher says
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach him how to use the new BioPulse lure system and he'll be eating fish every night from the professional circuit, as long as it's not catch and release.
At least that's the kind of marketing pitch coming from Louisiana State University, where the BioPulse breakthrough has made a researcher from the biological sciences department the big kahuna on campus.
LSU researcher John Caprio has reportedly discovered a set of natural stimuli that activate the taste sensors inside fish, compelling them to take after a specific artificial lure like it was the best and last live meal on the planet.

[1/8/10] Chicago Muskie Show will reel in fishermen
There is a muskie mystique. Some call it "the fish of a 10,000 casts." And when you do hook one, will you have the resolve to fight it, tire it out and reel it in?
"It's a fish with big teeth," Steve Statland said. "They don't get any bigger. It's the biggest, meanest, scariest and most sought-after freshwater trophy fish there is."
Statland is co-owner of Tri-Esox Productions Ltd., which is putting on the 15th annual Chicago Muskie Show this weekend at Harper College in Palatine. He expects about 5,000 visitors.
Among them will be Emmett Brown, executive director of the Fresh Water Fishing Hall Fame & Museum in Hayward, Wis. He said the muskie has a "Loch Ness appeal." It can grow to 6 feet, weigh more than 50 pounds and feasts on ducks and muskrats. And it brings in tourists.

[1/6/10] LSU professor develops technology to take mystery out of fishing
Fishing, a supposedly relaxing pastime, all too often becomes a frustrating series of near misses and lost chances for the recreational sportsman. This frustration is magnified for those who make their living through fishing in professional tournaments; a near miss on the pro-fishing circuit can mean the difference between lucrative endorsement deals and a catastrophic six-figure loss. But what if there was a way to not only attract any fish in the area to your lure, but also to make them take the bait? That's where LSU's own John Caprio came in, developing then licensing scientific technology that takes the mystery out of reeling in the big one.
