[8/27/10] Starvation Walleye Classic fishing tournament brings families together
What do rubber duckies and trophy walleye have in common?
Try the Starvation Walleye Classic fishing tournament.
The 19th annual walleye tournament on a Utah reservoir with a deceiving name is being held Sept. 11-12 with more than 80 anglers and a bevy of rubber ducks expected to participate.
Irene Hansen was a volunteer with the Duchesne Chamber of Commerce when the first tournament was being organized. Even then, she realized the potential a fishing tournament could bring to the Uintah Basin community.
"What a way to promote our beautiful little gateway city," Hansen thought two decades ago.

[8/23/10] Alabama Hunting and Fishing Licenses on Sale Monday
The sale of recreational hunting and fishing licenses for Alabama's 2010-2011 season begins on August 23, 2010.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources reminds hunters and anglers that all current recreational licenses expire on August 31, 2010. Several years ago, the Alabama Legislature changed the license year so that both hunting and fishing licenses expire on the same date each year, August 31.
Hunters and anglers are encouraged to purchase both licenses at the beginning of the license year. "Purchasing a fishing license at the same time you purchase your hunting license makes sense. The price is the same no matter when you buy it, but purchasing now gets you a full year of fishing privileges," said ADCNR spokesperson Kim Nix. "In addition, a person eliminates the chance of being in a situation where they are in violation of the law because their license is out of date."

[8/10/10] More Gulf waters to reopen to fishing
Federal officials today will open further Gulf of Mexico waters closed by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, is set to hold a news conference this afternoon in Panama City Beach. She'll announce that commercial and recreational fishing in federal waters off Florida's Panhandle will open again. Details of the areas to be opened have not been released.
Gulf waters off Florida more than 10 miles out -- where federal control begins -- have been closed to fishing since June. In July, after the spill was contained at the wellhead, a large portion of the Gulf was re-opened, but none of the sections adjacent to state waters closer to shore. Nearly a quarter of U.S. waters in the Gulf remain closed to fishing.

[7/27/10] Wolak Wins Elite Series Bass Fishing Event on Lake Champlain
Holding off a hard-charging Ryan Said, Dave Wolak of Wake Forest, N.C., had just enough weight Saturday to take the 2010 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open on Lake Champlain. Wolak amassed a three-day total of 54 pounds, 1 ounce, to score his second BASS victory.
"This tournament means more to me than anything in my career," said Wolak, a Bassmaster Elite Series pro. "More than the Rookie of the Year or the Bassmaster Major that I won. This lake has a sense of purity about it, and when you come up here you really have to find the fish first. You have to make changes navigationally and strategically.
"I came up here planning to fish for largemouth thinking that's what was going to win it, but I started fishing for smallies early on. I made a critical move on Friday because the north wind made me fish shallow. I found a grass mat and whacked 'em. That wind tucked the fish up under there."

Along the way, he meets the locals, observes their customs and hears surprising fishing legends.

[7/20/10] FLW Bass Fishing League holding tournament on Cayuga Lake this Saturday
The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to Cayuga Lake this Saturday (July 24) for the third of five stops in the Northeast Division series. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.
"There are massive amounts of grass and grass flats on the lake," said Chevy pro Dave Lefebre of Union City, Pa., who won a tournament on Cayuga Lake. "The grass patterns are going to be key in winning this event. Flipping heavy jigs in thick milfoil is how I won the tournament on the lake.
"Anglers will see a mix of both large and smallmouth bass; the north end of the lake has the largemouth bite and I think that is where the tournament is going to be won."

Before each event I said a little prayer and picked the guys I thought looked good - this was pure luck!"

Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo officers are preparing for an event that will feature 15 saltwater and six freshwater divisions -- fewer than in the past thanks to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

[6/21/10] BASS Founder Lures Guests to Personal Fishing Hole
Ray Scott helped make bass fishing big business. Now, he's created a business out of his personal playground.
The founder of the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society and well-known fishing impresario has launched his own BB&B: bed, breakfast and bass.
Ray Scott's Trophy Bass Retreat opened in January, offering use of the three lakes on his suburban Montgomery property that have hosted presidential fishing excursions, as well as stays in the guesthouse where former President George H.W. Bush bunked down on several visits. Of course, the fish are big and so are the prices.
A group of six from Birmingham happily plunked down $550 apiece recently to fish from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a couple of meals and use of Scott's boats thrown in.

[6/18/10] Father's Day, fishing and kids go together
As a young boy, my father began taking me on fishing trips as soon as I was able to hold a rod. I grew up loving to fish, and those memories of fishing with my dad are still clear and extra special to me some 35 years after his passing.
As my children came along, I tried to take them fishing as much as I could, and I have many fond memories of their development on the water. I just hope that their memories of fishing with me are as positive as those of mine fishing with my dad. Now I have grandchildren who enjoy fishing, and I try to spend more time with them on the water.

[6/2/10] Oil spill has created a new world for south Louisiana anglers
What a strange, sad Memorial Day this will be.
Traditionally this holiday signals the start of the best season of the year for local anglers - three to four months of chasing fish from the deep waters of the open Gulf of Mexico to the shallow interior marshes. It's a season for family and friends, for fishing favorite spots, remembering old times and creating new memories. For some of us, it's what makes the many aggravations of living in south Louisiana worth the price; when we just can't take it anymore, we know relief is only a short boat ride away.

[5/24/10] Bass fishing report
Finally got out for a day of bass fishing. Wow they were ready for it and so was I. I had over a hundred bass, many over 3 pounds. The water temp was 66 degrees and weeds have grown nicely. It was cloudy and raining on and off all day, finishing with lots of rain, thunder and lightning, so with the mosguitos, I called it a day.
The bass were biting most anything, but it was watching for the signals they gave you that got you the most fish. Most of the day the water was still and no fish action happening, I slowed down and put a jig and plastic right on em. They took it very good, so they are eating. When some were high in the water and pushing the water around, I went to a top water and they crushed it. It was awesome.

This week, Reese is bidding for his fifth consecutive top 5 finish in Elite competition, which is unprecedented territory. But he will have to hold off two decorated veterans and fellow AOY winners Gary Klein (second) and Mark Davis (third) to accomplish that feat.

[5/5/10] The PGA Tour's Best Fishing Holes
This week's Players' Championship at Pete Dye's inimitable Sawgrass is unofficially known on the PGA Tour as "the fifth major." But for some tour players the event has become known for something else: as a place where they can score a trophy bass.
A few years ago, as he approached the Par 5, 16th hole at Sawgrass during the tournament's first practice day, Briny Baird gazed at the three-acre pond that runs down its right-hand side. The sight proved irresistible. As other tour players worked out the kinks in their swings, Baird decided to take a few casts into the pond with a rod he stowed away in his bag for that purpose.
