FRENCHMAN LAKE: Ice-fishing remains good near the dam. Fishermen are using nightcrawlers and Crystal Bullet jigs. Yellow seems to be better than other colors. Mid-day is the best time to fish. Ice is about 8 to 10 inches thick and thicker in other areas. Roads are clear to the dam and farther on both sides of the lake. Wiggin's Trading Post, 530-993-4683.
LAKE DAVIS: Ice fishing results are rated as fair to off the charts. Access to the lake is good at the dam and on the east side road down as far as Mallard Cove. The ice is reported to be 5 to 6 inches thick, however the thickness can change quickly and ice should be used with caution. Good success has been coming at the dam, Coot Bay and if you're up to a longer hike, the area at the west side of the Island. The hot bait has been a salmon egg/worm combination. Fish size has been running 12 to 17 inches. Portola's Joe Wirtz and Mike Trukki reported catching and releasing approximately 50 fish up to 17 inches last week. They were fishing by the dam in water that is 37-48 feet deep. Call 530-832-5251 or e-mail
