Nevada fishing report 2/6/09
LAKE DAVIS: Ice-fishing is rated as fair with a one fish per rod average for fat rainbows up to 19 inches and 2½ pounds. Powerbait has been the most effective bait and has brought best results when fished at a depth of 6-10 feet deep. Ice conditions are reported to be holding from 10-12 inches thick. There is vehicle access on the east road to Mallard Cove. Always use the ice with caution and at your own risk.
PYRAMID LAKE: Most recent reports are that the fishing is slow. The water is cold and there have not been many storms, which usually means the fish are in deeper, warmer water. Most of that water cannot be reached from shore or from a ladder. This is a typical pattern for early February. A storm or two and some warmer weather can change fishing overnight. Best to go early or late. Cloudy days are also a good opportunity. Look for fishing to improve dramatically over the next few weeks as the weather warms. Slow stripping wooly worms and beetles with a shooting head in deeper water is how most anglers are catching fish on a fly rod. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
TRUCKEE RIVER: The flows are perfect from Boca Bridge through Reno. The water upstream of Boca Bridge is low because of the lack of water coming out of Lake Tahoe. The water is still cold, so the fish are still hanging out in slower runs and deeper pools. Golden stone fly nymphs in sizes 8 to 14 fished under an indicator have been working well. Streamers stripped slowly in deeper water also have been catching a few fish. The water in the Truckee is low and clear so a stealthy approach is a must, not something you hear much about on the Truckee. Late morning to mid-afternoon has been the best time to fish. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: The road to the Little Truckee is pretty clear of snow. The fishing has been decent. The flows are 127 c.f.s.,, which is perfect. The water is cold and the fish are a little lethargic, so a good drift is a must. Nymphing with midges and Baetis nymphs under an indicator is the way to go. The weather could change any day and close the road again, so check the weather before you go. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
EAST WALKER RIVER: The fishing has been really good over the past week or so. Reno Fly Shop guide Chris Evison has been getting numerous clients into fish on dry flies. The nymphing has been excellent as well. Overnight air temps are still pretty cold, so the best time to go is late morning to mid-afternoon. Midges and Baetis in both dries and wets have been really productive. The flows are really low so take your time and approach runs slowly. Take a look for rising fish before casting.
