Default Nevada fishing report 1/30/09

TOPAZ LAKE: Another good week of fishing. Many 3- and 4-pound fish being caught both from shore and boats. George Ness landed a 24-inch, 4-pound, 5-ouncetrout on Powereggs from the southwest shore. Ken Robertson, from Yerington, caught an 18.5-inch, 4-pound, 4-ounce trout using worms on the west shore. Ken Dines caught a 21.5-inch, 3-pound, 11-ounce fish using a worm on the south side. He also landed one that was a 20.5-inches, 3-pounds, 1-ounce on the same side. Jeff Dines of Topaz Ranch Estates caught a nice 17-inch, 2 pounder on worms on the south shore also. Don Romine, from Gardnerville, caught had a 20 inch, 3-pound, 6-ounce trout. He was trolling using a Triple teezer. Topaz Lodge, 266-3338. Topaz Marina, 266-3550.

FRENCHMAN LAKE: The ice is 7 inches thick on the back side of the lake. Anglers were catching limits at Lunker Point with nightcrawlers. The roads are still not plowed past the dam. Snow and ice cover some of the road past the dam, but other places are clear. Be careful when driving past the dam. Conditions can change quickly so call ahead to check. Wiggin's Trading Post, 530-993-4683.

LAKE DAVIS: Ice-fishing results have improved and vehicle access has improved as the east side road has been opened to Mallard Cove. The fish being caught have weighed up to 2 pounds. The best bite has been at a depth of 10 feet with Powerbait and nightcrawlers the baits of choice. The ice condition remains good with depths of 10-plus inches reported. dollardsmarket.com.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing is fair. Trollers are getting fish by going deep, 80-100 feet down, and using Flatfish and spoons. Anglers vertical jigging are doing OK also. Shore fishing can be decent if you get to a place where there are drop-offs, such as Block House, the Cattleguards or Spider Point. Fly-fishermen are using beetles and big woolly buggers. Spin guys are using mostly maribou jigs and spoons. Not a lot of fish being taken, but some big ones, including a 12-pound, 3-ounce fish caught Saturday by a fly-fisherman using a big, black woolly bugger with a red tail. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR: The barometer has been like a yo-yo the past several days and fishing has slowed. The ice is holding at 18-24 inches thick. Trout are shallow and perch are deep. Try jigs in yellow, green or cream color. Tip it with a piece of crawler, mealworm or a little, salad-sized shrimp. Trout derby set for Feb. 14-15. Coyotes are on the prowl so be careful with your dogs. Dunn's Wildhorse Resort, dunnswildhorsresort.com or 775-758-6472.

LAKE TAHOE: Fishing should be good if you can get on the water. January typically produces good Mackinaw fishing. The lake can have its challenges this time of year with snow, wind and cold temperatures. But for the anglers willing to confront the weather, limits of macks have been reported in the 2-pound and 12-pound range. Dollar Point and Ski Run Shelf have been good locations. Try using Trophy sticks and minnows rigged behind dodgers in 100-250 feet of water.

TRUCKEE RIVER: Fishing is decent, but has slowed a bit lately. Nightcrawlers are bringing in a few nice browns and some holdover rainbows and cutthroats. Fly-fishermen are using small nymphs, size 14 or 16 in a variety of patterns, such as birds nests or hares ears. For spinners, try Panther Martins. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.
