Default Nevada fishing report 11/7/08

FRENCHMAN LAKE: Bank fishing has been good at Lunker Point. Most anglers are floating nightcrawlers. Blow them up or use marshmallows just up from the bottom. Fly-fishing has been good using anything green. Streams in the area close Nov. 15. The weather is getting colder so mid-day, when it is warmest, is the bast time to fish. Wiggin's Trading Post, 530-993-4683.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing is picking up and is good from the shore. The area around the nets has been good for fly- and spin-fishermen. Spinners using spoons and lead head maribou jigs. Fly guys using beetles and wooly in midnight black and Reds olive and white with a red tail. Fishing is also good from shore around Block House and Wino Beach. Boaters are doing best from Pelican north towards Spider and Warrior Point. Troll around 45-50 feet. The water is cooling and fish are moving up a little. The new Salmon lure has been good. Also, Flatfish in glo-belly purple back, spoons and Apex lures. Some fish reported in the 8-10-pound range, but not many. November is traditionally a good month for bigger fish. Also March and early April. Temperature in the low to mid 50s is the key. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

TRUCKEE RIVER: Fishing is good, not great, but better than fair. Anglers drifting nightcrawlers are doing better than anybody. All through Reno is as good as anywhere. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

EAGLE LAKE: Fishing has been very good, both for numbers and for nice-sized fish. Best on the north side by Spalding. Try nightcrawlers under a slip bobber from shore. Trollers doing well with X4 frog-color Flatfish and rainbow runners in red. Also good are rainbow-colored No. 2 Flatfish and trolling nightcrawlers behind a wiggle fin. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows are 6,000 c.f.s. Lower Sacramento. Fly fishing has been good. Catching many nice rainbows in the Redding area, using Gordon's No. 16 is the hot ticket. Anderson area is good fishing. The trout have been ranging in size from 10-15 inches. Flies working best are Gordon's No. 16 and Bead head Pheasants Tail. Egg patterns have been best bet. Spin fishing for trout using back trolling Wee warts, Hot shots, and Flatfish lures. King salmon fishing on the Sac River is open through Dec. 31. Anglers can keep one king salmon per person. Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Kirk Portocarrero, 800-670-4448 or 530-221-6151.

LAKE DAVIS: Bait-fishing from shore at Mallard Cove and Fairview has been producing most days. Fly-fishing has slowed just a bit. The favorite areas are Jenkins, Freeman and Mosquito Slough. Casting and stripping a cinnamon or brown wooly bugger on an intermediate sinking line. Fishing an indicator with two bead head nymphs or midges has also been effective. Effective patterns have been olive Hares Ears, Pheasant Tail Flashbacks and red Copper Johns. Most days the best time to fish has been around noon when the wind comes up to break surface of the water, which starts the bite. The Honker boat ramp is still open. Four-wheel-drive is recommended as the water has receded beyond the pavement and you're launching on the lake bottom. Web site: dollardsmarket.com.

TRUCKEE RIVER: The fly fishing on the Truckee has been sensational. There have been some really big Brown Trout caught as of late. Steve Privette, one of Reno Fly Shop's guides caught and released two Browns over 22 inches in the same hole on Monday. On the California side, the best fishing is downstream of Boca Bridge. The water is really low upstream of that. The flows are perfect from the Bridge down. Nymphing and streamer fishing has been the way to go. October Caddis nymphs fished with a size 16 to 18 bead head Guides Choice Hare's Ear for nymphing and Mudler and Sculpin patterns for streamers fished with a floating line and a Rio sinking leader. On the Nevada side, the entire river is in great shape. Use the same techniques as in California. The best time to fish is from about 9 a.m. until about 3 p.m. Flows: Town of Truckee 42 cfs, Boca Bridge 385 cfs, Farad 371 cfs, Reno 337 cfs.

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: Flows are 108 cfs. This is the best fall flows we have had in years. The Kokanee are running and not too far behind are the Big Brown Trout. There still is a Baetis hatch on cloudy days and fish can be caught on the surface when they are hatching. Nymphing with Baetis nymphs in size 18 and 20 is working well.

EAST CARSON RIVER: Flows are 87 cfs. This is up some due to recent rains. It should fluctuate up and down over the next few weeks due to air temps and precipitation. The fishing has been decent. Nymphing with Baetis and any small nymph under an indicator has been effective. Approach holes and runs carefully not to spook fish in shallow water.

EAST WALKER RIVER: Flows are 36 cfs. The ranchers finally have stopped calling for water. These flows are normal for this time of year and expect them to stay this way until spring. Fishing is still excellent. Nymphing with small nymphs size 16 to 20 has been working. Soon the overnight air temps will cause the river to freeze up some and the fishing will come to a screeching halt until it warms up again in spring.

PYRAMID LAKE: Typical fall fishing at the lake. One to two fish an hour is a good day right now. For anglers who move around and find fish there have been reports of 10 to 20 fish days. The anglers that just fish around the nets area are not doing that well. The south end of the lake has had the best reports with beaches like Wino, Popcorn and Lone Tree all fishing pretty good.

DAVIS LAKE: It really depends on who you talk to. Our best reports have been coming from the Camp 5 area. Stripping Sheep Creek Specials in 6 to 12 feet of water with a type two sinking line has been working well.
