Say you caught a fish, and the hook is in a tricky position and hard to remove - for example, so far down you can't reach it with your hand, or it has embedding itself with the hook going to the fish's eyes (from the inside). What do you do to remove it? We carry around a set of pliers to help us reach where we can't. If we can't remove the hook after a few minutes, we use nail clippers to snip the line as close as we can to the hook, then let the fish go.

Generally, if it's obvious the fish is going to die if we can't remove the hook, we'll go ahead and put it on the stringer so my husband can clean and cook it. There's no sense in tossing it back just for it to die.

We always carry a set of pliars as well, incase my boyfriend needs to break the hook. That is what we usually do and it has worked for us everytime.

Sometime we fish in a catch and release area though, and we have no choice but to let an injured fish go. Breaks my heart.

If it's a catch and release area, we'd do our best to remove the hook. If we couldn't, we would try to cut as much line off as possible and then let it go. I hate it when they get snagged in unusual areas. The eye area bugs me the most. :(

About how much does that hook tool cost? It looks like it would be pretty useful; I'd like to pick one up.

Yes, these are awesome. We had one of these until last year and our daughter dropped it over the side of the boat.. Needless to say we don't have them anymore. Anyhow, we now carry pliers and I usually always can get the hook out like that. We never fish catch and release. We fish legally though so on occasion you do have to let one go but not normally...
