INDIAN RIVER COUNTY

Chuck Hardee of Professional Outfitters in Vero Beach said catch-and-release snook fishing is a best bet these days for action. Offshore, cold water has effected the bottom bite and the beach has been hot and cold for action. He is using a quarter-ounce Johnson sprite gold spoon to mimic glass minnows and pilchards the snook are feeding on. Big trout are taking live pigfish and pinfish, Hardee said. The edges of the flats and potholes are where the bigger trout have been lying in ambush.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY

Capt. Joe Ward of Capt. Joe’s River charters in Fort Pierce said Matt and son Jesse Cervone visiting from Fort Lauderdale fished The Boils where Jesse caught a 38-pound and a 24-pound kingfish using threadfins for bait. Visiting with the Cervones, Brian Zdrojowy of Westminster, Md. caught a nice seatrout on a topwater plug just after daylight and his first ever snook from the docks at the Dockside Inn on Fort Pierce Inlet. The snook was caught on a live shrimp and released. Wayne Wilson caught and released a snook estimated to be 25-28 pounds on a pinfish.

MARTIN COUNTY

Capt. Greg Scherer of Bridge Tender Guide Service out of Billy Bones Bait and Tackle in Port St. Lucie said a trip with anglers Curt Myer and Jimmy Helms included the sighting of a hundred tarpon just south of Harbor Ridge on the west side of the river, however there was not to be any bites. At the Evans Crary Bridge, they caught and released a 50-pound Goliath grouper and three snook 17-20 pounds. There has been some bait in the Indian River Lagoon scattering on the falling tide on the flats. Big trout and snook are busting the bait.

LAKE OKEECHOBEE

Capt. Larry Wright who guides out of Garrard's Bait and Tackle in Okeechobee said bass fishing has been steady, but there are not many anglers on the lake these days. During a trip last week, Wright guided clients from California to a catch and release of 106 bass in two days. The biggest was about 8-pounds, but there was a good number of 5-6-pounders caught. Shiners are still the best way to catch the bigger fish. Artificial lures will get some bites, too, he said. Chartreuse spinner baits and watermelon red flukes are good choices.
