Good news on the perch front, mixed reviews on walleye.
Yellow perch fishing has been good in Lake Erie at a depth of 54 feet off Elk Creek. All along the western side of Erie, perch fishing has been good in depths of 54 feet out to about 60 feet, and odds are very good that if boats fish deeper, they will catch perch there also. This does not mean you can drop an anchor anywhere along the western side between these depths and catch perch, but with a little educated searching you should be able to locate some. Anglers off Conneaut, Ohio, also are making excellent perch catches.
Perch still are being caught off the point of Presque Isle at a depth of about 55 feet. On the eastern side, perch have been caught off Four Mile Creek between the 45-foot and 50-foot contours and off Twenty Mile Creek in just 27 feet of water.
When perch have been finicky, a Sabiki Glow Fish Skin rig has been productive, but note that this rig has more hooks than the rules allow, so some must be clipped.
Walleye fishing has been more difficult, a likely result of rough water which often disrupts walleye patterns. On the west side, some of the better walleye fishing has been in the First Trench at depths of 64 feet to 70 feet, but some still are being caught in depths of 25 feet to 30 feet. Schools tend to be small, so once you find them, get a mark on the GPS and swing as soon as the hits stop. On the east side, walleye have been caught in a very precise area 1/8-mile east from Shade's Beach in depths of 35 feet to 42 feet.
Smallmouth bass fishing has cooled down in Presque Isle Bay, except off the South Pier. Largemouth bass still are providing good sport in the lagoons and elsewhere. Perch fishing has been quite good off all the piers, though the North Pier has been the best. Northern pike and gar are being caught around the docks on the city side of the bay, the gar of course only accidentally.
Inland, Chautauqua Lake muskie anglers have had good results casting bucktails and jerk baits over the weeds from Prendergast to Camp Chautauqua. Largemouth bass fishing has been good around the docks in the southern basin. Panfish have been hitting in the narrows, particularly off the Bemus side. Bluegill and some pike are being taken at Eaton Reservoir.
