Local lakes: Bank anglers fishing at Floras Lake are reporting good catches of rainbow and cutthroat trout. Fishing a nightcrawler on the bottom has been very effective. Later this month, Floras Lake is scheduled to receive 4,950 legal-sized trout. When the winds are down, this lake is a great spot for families with kids to fish. The boat launch area is safe, with plenty of public access for boaters and bank anglers. Bradley Lake in Bandon has been producing a few trophy-sized trout. Trout fishing hasn’t been red hot, but should start heating up soon. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is scheduled to stock Bradley Lake with an additional 200 trophy-sized trout next week. Anglers fishing Empire Lakes in Coos Bay had a great weekend catching hatchery rainbows. Lime- or chartreuse-colored Powerbait fished off the bottom was working well. Empire Lakes is scheduled to receive an additional 500 trophy-size trout next week. Our good friend Cathy at Lakeside Marina told us the largemouth bass fishing is getting better each week. The bass are starting to become much more active as the weather starts looking like spring.

Local rivers: Last week we saw a decrease in the numbers of spring salmon taken on the lower Rogue River, mainly due to a dip in river temperatures. By last weekend, things heated back up again, and anglers were hooking into some nice salmon. Jim Carey from the Rogue Outdoor Store told me the salmon are running big this year, with most of the fish in the 20 to 25 pound range, and a few up to 30 pounds. One boat fishing Sunday had four springers, which weighed in at a total of 100 pounds. Jim also told us that 60 to 70 percent of the fish have been hatchery fish, which is great news for anglers wanting to keep fish.

Local beaches: Last weekend, local surf anglers did well fishing near the jetties in Bandon. One couple caught their limits of pinkfin surf perch on live sand shrimp. Look for surf fishing to pick up this spring as perch start to gather near the mouths of local rivers. We are starting to see anglers sign up for the May Surf Perch Derby. I believe this is the 18th year that Port O’ Call has sponsored the derby. All anglers have to do is sign in and donate $5, which goes toward first prize, which is all the cash donated. For more info, you can stop by Port O’ Call or give us a call at 541-347-2875.

Area shellfish: Boaters crabbing in Coos Bay are reporting better numbers of Dungeness crab taken. One boat reported catching two limits of crab last Saturday. An eight-day series of morning minus tides begins this coming Saturday on the South Coast. If the swells are down, look for razor clammers to hit the local beaches. All Oregon beaches are open for razor clams and mussels.

(Tony Roszkowski has owned and operated Port O’ Call - TonysCrabShack.com - on the Bandon waterfront since 1989. Many South Coast anglers rely on his fish and shellfish reports. Hear more from Tony on ‘Oregon Outdoors’ Thursdays on KWRO 630 AM.)
