Local lakes: Coho salmon fishing on Tenmile Lakes and Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes has been fair to good. Larry Beckstead of Bandon and his friend, Troy Wolfe, of Lakeside each caught a nice coho on Tenmile Lakes on Saturday. These fish weighed in at around 12 pounds and were caught on Brad’s cut-plug lures in about 12 feet of water. Anglers fishing the many arms of Tenmile Lakes have had better success than anglers fishing the center of the lake. Larry and Troy caught their coho up Coleman Arm on South Tenmile Lake.
Anglers fishing local lakes for rainbow trout are still reporting good fishing. With lake levels up from recent rains, anglers are reporting easier access at boat launches that were full of weeds.
Local rivers: Fall Chinook fishing on the Chetco River started to slow down a bit last week. The river has been in good shape and lots of fish have moved through in recent weeks. Dave from the Chetco Outdoor Store told me the river is starting to transition to winter steelhead. He said that three steelhead were weighed in at the store on Monday.
Fall Chinook fishing on the Elk River was good last weekend. Anglers bank fishing on the lower river reported catching some fresh fish that had just moved into the system. With rain in the forecast for most of the week, look for fishing to be good for driftboaters and bank anglers. The best angling on the Elk River occurs when the river gauge is reading five feet and dropping. Sixes River usually is fishable two days after the Elk River is.
We haven’t heard of any winter steelhead being caught in the Coos or Coquille river systems. The first steelhead are typically caught in the Coos River around Thanksgiving weekend.
Area shellfish: Recent rains have started to affect the crabbing in the bay at Bandon. We are still seeing a few legal-size crab come out of the bay, but the majority of them are undersized. As the rains continue, look for crabbing to slow down even more. Boaters crabbing in Coos Bay were still bringing in limits of nice Dungeness crab last weekend. Dock crabbers were bringing in a mix of red rock and Dungeness crab.
All of us at Port O’ Call and Tony’s Crab Shack would like to wish all of you a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
