Local lakes: Cathy from Lakeside Marina told us that the rainbow trout fishing at Tenmile Lakes has remained very good. She said the largemouth bass fishing this summer wasn’t as good as last year, with far fewer fish taken during the tournaments. Local kids are having fun catching yellow perch from the public boat launch pier in Lakeside. Most anglers are doing best fishing nightcrawlers. Anglers fishing Empire Lakes reported catching some nice holdover rainbow trout over the Labor Day weekend.

Local rivers: Chinook fishing continues to be slow in the bay at Gold Beach. Colder-than-normal water temperatures have the fish moving upriver. Anglers anchoring upriver have been catching fish on anchovies or spinners. Summer steelhead fishing has been good in the lower Rogue. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife netted more than 500 steelhead in their test net recently.

There was a good bite at Rocky Point on the lower Coquille River on Labor Day. Bruce, Randall, Devinn and Trevor Manicke of Bandon landed a 35-pound Chinook and three others that were more than 25 pounds. Fishing for Chinook salmon has been excellent this past week in Coos Bay. Anglers are spread out from the U.S. Highway 101 bridge up into the Coos River. The best fishing has occurred in the Marshfield Channel up to the Chandler Bridge on the Coos River. Trolling cut-plug herring or sardines has produced the most fish. If you don’t have a boat, a good place to bank fish this time of year is at the end of Ferry Road in North Bend.

The Coos S.T.E.P. Salmon Derby takes place this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11 and 12. For ticket information, call Mark Fleck at Englund Marine, 541-888-6723.

Pacific Ocean: Prowler Charters in Bandon — 541-347-1901 — is still running bottom fishing trips daily. Bottom fishing has been excellent all summer long out of Bandon. On Sunday, Ken Butler on the Prowler helped his clients catch 38 albacore tuna. The tuna are out between 35 and 45 miles north of Bandon. A reminder: The 2010 ocean sport salmon season ended Monday, Sept. 6, on the South Coast.

Area shellfish: Crabbing has remained excellent on the South Coast. Plenty of visitors took home crab over the Labor Day weekend. The best time of day for dock crabbing on Weber’s Pier has been in the early morning, regardless of tides. Boaters are doing best on slack tides. Kids Fish Free update: The winners of this year’s Kids Fish Free Drawing will be bottom fishing with Prowler Charters this Saturday, Sept. 11. They also will have dinner at Bandon Bill’s before spending the night at the Inn at Face Rock. We would like to thank these local businesses, along with everyone else who has supported the program.

(Tony Roszkowski has owned and operated Port O’ Call — TonysCrabShack.com — on the Bandon waterfront since 1989. Many South Coast anglers rely on his fish and shellfish reports. Hear more from Tony on ‘Oregon Outdoors’ Thursdays on KWRO 630 AM.)
