Horsetooth Reservoir near Fort Collins has provided good fishing for smallmouth bass and walleyes. Crappie have been active in several other northern Front Range reservoirs. In southeastern Colorado, Nee Gronda Reservoir offers fairly good fishing for saugeyes, and John Martin Reservoir has been producing numerous white bass with some wipers mixed in. Navajo Reservoir remains a good choice for crappie in the southwestern part of the state.
Lake fishermen still are enjoying good activity for trout at the “Sagebrush Lakes” of North Park and Elevenmile and Spinney Mountain reservoirs in South Park. Somewhat higher, the Big Creek lakes are open, and a handful of fishermen have been getting some decent-sized rainbow and a few lake trout. Small mackinaw have been plentiful at Turquoise Reservoir near Leadville and the Mount Elbert forebay above Twin Lakes. The forebay also has been fairly good for rainbow trout.
With major streams running high and off-color, smaller creeks, beaver ponds and select tailwaters remain the best choice for stream fishermen. The South Platte River system, with June 10 morning flows of 156 cfs below Cheesman Dam, 145 cfs through Elevenmile Canyon and 104 cfs below Spinney Mountain Dam, offers the best tailwater conditions, though as always, flows are subject to change.
