BEST BET
Howard Kleeman of Slim's Fishing Camp in Belle Glade reported low numbers of people fishing, but those who do are having great success on largemouth bass while fishing with artificial lures and live shiners, and lots of shellcrackers and bluegills on crickets, minnows and small jigs. The best action has been in the Rim Ditch and Dynamite Holes. Kleeman said water levels are falling, but they can still launch their boats.
MIAMI DADE/BROWARD
Captain Jay Cohen on the charter boat Spellbound out
of Haulover Marina reported steady action on kingfish and blackfin tuna, and a few sailfish. The best action has been from 200 feet into the reef. Cohen said most boats are not going offshore looking for dolphin because of the good tuna action inside, and because of high fuel costs. . . . Bryan Boyd and his friends from Virginia fished offshore of Fort Lauderdale with captain David Ide on the charter boat Pamela Sue, and they hooked up to a huge dolphin. The group took turns fighting the dolphin, and, at the dock, the fish weighed
65 pounds. The dolphin ate a live goggle eye fished under a kite. . . . Robert and Mark Dulberg and their sons Daniel and Jason teamed to catch more than 20 sea trout and snappers during a half-day trip in North Biscayne Bay.
KEYS
Captain Ralph Delph of Delph Fishing Charters out of Key West reported sailfish, blackfin tuna and kingfish can be caught west of Key West. Dolphins are being caught out front of Key West, yellowtail and mutton snappers are hot on the reefs, and amberjacks are on the deeper reefs and wrecks. . . . The Stringer family from Champaign, Ill., fished offshore of Marathon with captain Nick Borraccino on the charter boat Adios out of the Seven Mile Marina in Marathon. They caught dolphins, yellowtail snappers, shark and amberjack, and they released
a 50-pound goliath grouper.
TREASURE COAST
Freddy Caimotto from the Snook Nook in Jensen Beach reported good snook fishing along the spoil islands north of the North Bridge in Fort Pierce on live pilchards and soft plastics. Redfish are on the Harbor Branch flats, eating live crabs. In the inlets, snook are starting to gather on the outgoing tides, and big tarpon and jack crevalles are along the beaches. Permit are schooling around the boils and sand piles. Offshore, kingfish are biting in 30 feet of water, and sailfish and a few dolphins are biting in 80 feet of water.
FLORIDA BAY
Captain Jim Hobales of Caught Lookin Charters reported that this is the time of the year when snook and redfish are gathering around outside creek mouths and rivers and can be caught on suspending lures, such as the Rapala Twitchin' Rap and Gulp baits hooked to a half-ounce Hook Up Lure. Add tarpon to the mix, and an angler has a great opportunity at a Grand Slam. A few cobias and tripletail are available around the Park Boundary markers. . . . Steve Bukowski, son Collin and daughter Corrine of Miami teamed to catch and release six out of eight snook up to
31 inches, redfish, snapper, trout, jacks, ladyfish and two bull sharks of 40 and 60 pounds while fishing White-
water Bay and the Gulf shorelines with captain Alan Sherman of Get Em Charters.
SOUTHWEST COAST
Captain Jeff Legutki of Anglers Addiction Fishing Charters out of Naples reported that the tourists have headed home for the summer, and the fish are feeding more aggressively. Legutki reported that he is having good action on tarpon weighing more than 100 pounds. Snook are schooling on the outside points, along with redfish, and nighttime snook and tarpon action continues to improve.
FRESHWATER
Water levels on Lake Okeechobee are down to 9.54 feet. Captain Alan Zaremba reported water levels in the Everglades Canal systems continue to be on the low side, and largemouth bass and panfish are feeding heavily there. . . . Nicole Tharp out of
Sawgrass Recreation Park reported that many largemouth bass are eating artificial lures and live shiners, with the best action along the north canal and toward the end of the east canal.
