MARTIN
Water conditions: Down 6 inches; low to mid-70s; clear. Anglers are catching good numbers of spotted bass, using Carolina-rigged plastics around long, sloping points on the main lake. Choice of plastics for the Carolina rig is varying between finesse worms to Strike King Zeroes and Mann's Dragin' Worms. Some anglers have reported catches of 50 or 60 in an afternoon. Good numbers of channel cats are also being caught day and night with cut shad, live minnows, nightcrawlers and chicken livers fished on the bottom in 12-20 feet. You may have to move around some to find the magic depth. Remember, it's summertime on Lake Martin -- and that means heavy boat traffic. Mornings, evenings and nights are often the best times for fishing.
WEST POINT
Water conditions: Full pool; mid-70s to low 80s; clear. A few bass are taking soft-plastic jerk baits during the morning and evening hours around flooded grass. As the water temperature climbs, crappie anglers will begin having some success using live minnows under the bridges after dark. Fishing for stripers, hybrids and white bass is improving and should get even better once the fish finish moving back into the main lake. Anglers who know how to locate the fish on their electronics are already catching good fish on live shad around the humps and road beds.
WALTER F. GEORGE
Water conditions: Full pool; high 70s; clear. Topwater fishing for largemouth bass has been great just after sunrise and just before dark with large baits like Zara Spooks and buzz baits. Fishing is still fairly tough during the middle of the day. Crappie fishing has improved quite a bit on the main lake. Some anglers are actually catching limits of eating-size crappie using live minnows in standing timber around 12-20 feet.
HARDING
Water conditions: Full pool; high 70s; clear. Good numbers of small spotted bass are taking soft-plastic jerk baits like trick worms and Senkos around boat docks and sea walls during the morning and evening hours. Night fishing has been good around boat docks with Texas-rigged worms and lizards. Good bass are also being caught around lighted piers at night with small crankbaits like the Bandit 200 Series. Night fishermen who are concentrating on lighted piers are catching lots of crappie and bluegill using small dark-colored jigs.
SEMINOLE
Water conditions: A foot down; high 70s; clear. Bluegill and shellcracker are still taking crickets and redworms in the coves and around the sandy points. Anglers using artificial baits haven't been having as much luck lately. Some anglers are still catching tilapia using chunks of nightcrawlers on a small hood beneath a float. Bass fishing has been fair with trick worms fished over the matted grass, but only during the early-morning hours.
CALLAWAY GARDENS
Water conditions: All lakes are full; 80 degrees; clear. Bass fishing has been excellent. Early mornings and cloudy days prior to rain have been the best times to fish. Most bass have been caught in 4-6 feet of water on soft plastics. A 10-pound largemouth was caught on a plastic worm from Mountain Creek Lake Thursday morning. Fishing has also been good with Flukes and shad-imitation crankbaits. Bream fishing has been hit-or-miss the past couple of weeks. Slowly worked jigs and subsurface flies in 4-6 feet of water have been working best. Crappie fishing on Mountain Creek Lake has been excellent with hair jigs and tube jigs.
