Anyone have any good "the fish was this big, but it got away!" stories? I had a pretty decent size walleye once, but it jumped on the line and snapped it!

I don't, but I've heard other people talk about the one that got away.

Anyone?

I can only think of once, in my own case. We were fishing under a bridge and my husband told me to fish deep. So, we baited the hook for a catfish (you know, that stinky stuff in the jar) and I cast my reel into a spot I thought would be good, just near the pylons. (Luckily we weren't that far from them. I'm not the best at casting.) After about 10 minutes, it's obvious there's something on the hook. So I set it and started reeling in. Just as the catfish surfaced, it jerked really hard to the left. Then really hard to the right. My line broke and away went my fish. My husband said it looked like about 10 pounds. It looked huge to me, but I'd been used to catching bream.

Oh wow, 10 pounds sounds huge to me! I'm not sure I've caught much of anything over 5. At least you had a witness to back your claims of getting the big one. :)

Man... I kid you not... this one cat fish I hooked just HAD to be somewhere between 10 - 12lbs. I do a lot of fishing for catfish during the summer, in a pond at the campground where me and my boyfriend have a trailer. There had always been these stories about this huge catfish that everyone tried to catch but never quite got. As bait, we had been using scallops rolled in garlic from the night before.

I hooked the darn thing and fought with it for about 10 minutes. I got it up to the bank, and my boyfriend was trying to grab him right when he snapped the line!!
