Lake Erie: Snow, high winds and the final days of rifle deer season kept steelhead anglers off the tributaries yesterday. Temperatures in the teens were expected to make them slushy and icy, though. Anglers in the past weeks were catching some steelhead, but in fewer numbers. The lakefront hasn't been much more productive. In Presque Isle Bay, perch were being caught off the piers.
Lake Pleasant (Erie County): This small glacial lake was stocked Monday with trout by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
Chapman Dam (Warren County): A state trout stocking is slated for Tuesday.
Allegheny River (Warren County): Shane Hennessey of Warren caught a 20-plus inch walleye on a jig Tuesday in the tailwaters of the Kinzua dam.
Allegheny River (Armstrong, Forest counties): Dave Lehman of Pleasantville caught an 11-pound, 4-ounce walleye on the Forest County stretch two weeks ago. He and Jeff Knapp of Kittanning caught three smallmouths, three northern pike, a couple of walleyes and a 40-inch muskie Tuesday in Armstrong County.
Two Mile Run Reservoir, aka Justus Lake (Venango County): A state trout stocking is slated for Tuesday.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Fishing pressure was down this week, although one boater had been consistently on the water before daylight and catching walleyes in 12 to 16 feet before weather turned rougher Wednesday. He reported some limits and fish up to 28 inches. Other anglers were doing well on crappies and bluegills off the marina docks.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): A few anglers were targeting crappies in the Muddy Creek and Shannon Run arms on the eastern side of the lake earlier this week.
Allegheny River: Harsh weather shut down angling action midweek, although a good walleye bite had been reported.
Ohio River: Higher than usual water was reported Wednesday, and earlier in the week one angler landed a couple of walleyes, 18 to 20 inches, from shore near Dashields Dam.
Dunlap Creek Lake (Fayette County): A few anglers were catching limits of trout in recent days, with sizes averaging 11 inches. Scented artificials and nightcrawlers fished off the bottom were productive.
Laurel Hill Lake (Somerset County): Water was high and muddy on this 63-acre impoundment midweek.
Spring Creek (Centre County): Good winter levels were reported midweek, and a few midges, Blue-Winged Olives (20, 22) and craneflies were hatching. Although the spawn was mostly over, anglers were urged to avoid walking through gravelly spawning beds to avoid disrupting spawning fish and to prevent damage to developing eggs.
Koon Lake (Bedford County): Nice crappies were hitting on small Twister-tail jigs in the deeper water.
