INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
It’s going to be a great week to get offshore. Sea conditions are forecast to be 1-to-2 feet all week. It could be a good time to plan a trip to the Other Side and check for fall tuna action. Closer to shore, expect to find improved snapper and grouper fishing on the reefs in 100-160 feet of water. Will the early signs of the bait run materialize? Possibly. So be rigged and ready to target prime tides along the beach, at the inlets and on the flats. Of course, snook season opens Tuesday and Sebastian typically has the best action early on.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY
Scott Crippen at White’s Tackle Shop in Fort Pierce said the offshore fishing has been quiet with the swell from T.S. Danny. However, anglers fishing the skinny water on the flats in the northern part of the county have been busy casting to schools of and solo redfish. Most of these fish have been around a boat or to, so expect them to be a little on the spooky side. That will require stealth and skill in order to approach these fish within casting range. Crippen said jerk baits and shrimp are the best offerings.
MARTIN COUNTY
Capt. George Gozdz of Flatlined Charters in Jensen Beach guided a family of three generations of anglers for three days late last week on the waters of the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. The catch list included snook, tarpon, goliath grouper, jacks, ladyfish, kingfish, cobia, sharks, bonitos and barracudas. Gozdz said his clients enjoyed the trips, but hoped to catch a large tarpon. Finally, in the last 30 minutes of the last day, they hooked, caught and released a tarpon estimated at 100 pounds.
LAKE OKEECHOBEE
The lake has been holding steady with a level of 14.08 feet above sea level. The consistency of the lake’s level through the summer has been a boon to the aquatic fish and plant life. With stable water levels during the season with the longest day period of sunlight, plants have been able to become better established and flourish. The water quality in the lake has also been superb allowing sunlight to penetrate deep into the tannin stained water. The result could spell unreal fishing in 2010 and 2011. Stay tuned.
