CHESAPEAKE BAY/OCEAN
Captain Percy Blackburn of the Virginia Charter Boat Association (http://www.fishva.com) reports there are plenty of fish to be caught from Gwynn's Island to the Great Wicomico River. Windmill Point bar is the hot spot. The best method for catching these fish is to troll Clark or Drone spoons at 6-7 knots behind #1 planers with a 15to 20-inch leader made with a 20-pound test monofilament line. If fishing in a group of boats, try using a #2 planer to fish deeper. A variety of #0 and #00 Clark spoons are efficient, with the chrome/pink being the most productive.
Flounder fishing continues to improve at the Cell/Buoy #42 area. Anglers fishing out of Fish On Bait and Tackle (804-776-0820) in Deltaville report catching more keeper fish than in previous weeks. The flounder action in the Rappahannock River is hot. Some anglers report catching 30 or more fish an outing, but the ratio of keeper fish to fish caught is about 1 to 10. Fishing the drop offs near the Rappahannock River Bridge and the bar at Towles Point have been productive.
Captain Phil Hughes (804-747-9338), who specializes in light tackle fishing on and near the Piankatank River, had good catches of speckled trout at Hole in the Wall. Many of the anglers targeting speckled trout report catching large croaker in the shallows. The best time to target croaker is after sunset. The charter boats out of Deltaville have been focused on catching spot. Harry Shaia , age 7, caught a 25-inch Spanish mackerel on Windmill Bar.
Captain Jerry Thrash reports Bay surface temperatures near the Cell are near 80 degrees, and Spanish mackerels have returned to local waters. Good catches were made off Stringray Light, along Windmill Bar and along the bar edge up into Fleets Bay. Spadefish of all sizes are available at the Cell, Wolf Trap and other bay structures. Fresh clams fished in a slick of clam chum work best for these fish. Creeks and rivers are producing keeper spot and croaker.
Notable catches: Michael Gray (Midlothian) flounder, 8 pounds, 8 ounces, 28 inches, live spot; Maphis O. Craig (Richmond) flounder, 7, 3, 26, cut bait; Gregory B. Thayor (Gloucester) red drum release, 52 inches.
