What a fun trip! An enthusiastic Shanks family was well prepared for their walleye trip on 'Erie. We had Mark and his wife, Kim, along with their son Adam and his wife...who happened to be expecting a new "walleye man". In addition, Mark's daughter "Angie" was ready to demonstrate her walleye prowness, and her fishing son, Jordon...aka..."The J-Man". No doubt...This family loves to fish and are good at it.

We left the Marina and roared towards the stained, stridated waters of the Maumee Bay. The Bay is streaked right now with patches of turbid and stained water, adjoining areas of clean water. In the transition waters between the two, are some very plump walleye...most from the Class of 2003, 22-24 inches...most 3 to 4 pounds....returning from their annual spawning ritual.

We traveled about 5 miles to some rock piles that are in the Bay and got down to business. Within minutes, we would be rewarded with a feisty 4 pound walleye.

Angie shows off a dandy 'Erie walleye caught on a White-n-Green "Killer Jig" with a stinger hook. Nice walleye!

After several drifts and 5 walleye, we checked out another one of my favorite spots, a little deeper...where the water was very clear. We put two quick walleye in the boat in our new spot and I looked over to see Mark's wife, Kim, pull back on the rod...she looked at me and said, "Capt. Rick, I think I hooked the anchor rope or something"...I pondered her remark for second...since I use an anchor at times. But, there was no anchor today!

I said Kim, "you got one!" She yanks back, sets the hook at "it's on"...half way into the battle, she hands the rod to her grandson, Jordan, so he can "get a taste" of the Lake Erie walleye fishing. What a blast!

Jordan reels in his 1st Lake Erie walleye, with Kim's coaching and watchful eye!

There is no doubt...that the early spring snap jig bite on Lake Erie has put it on the map as the “Walleye Capital of the World” and for good reason. About 80% of the lakes walleye population spawns on the south shore in Ohio waters from the Lake Erie reefs just off of the Camp Perry Firing range to Maumee Bay. These fish are schooled up and are easily caught using a snap jigging method with a number of different of heavy jigs, "slurple" is one of Capt. Rick's faves with Erie Quest Charters.
