INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
Bass fishing has been good for some, not so good for others. Jeanne Middleton at Middleton’s Fish Camp at Blue Cypress Lake said the best way to catch bass is still with live shiners, but there are no guarantees. The fish have been along the edge of the lake in the thick vegetation. Topwater lures have had some success. Offshore, the mackerel bite has been good near the inlets. Snapper fishing was good, too on the reefs in 90 feet of water.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY
Bluefish, mackerel, jacks and ladyfish have been schooling near the inlet and inside the Turning Basin. Sand perch, sheepshead, spot, lane snapper and croaker are being caught at the catwalks at South Bridge. Black drum are being caught at the jetty and at North Bridge. Small pieces of shrimp fished on ¼-ounce jigs or on multiple hook rigs fished on the bottom is the best technique. Trout fishing has been good, with the best bite in the clear water along the west shore of the Indian River Lagoon near Midway Road.
MARTIN COUNTY
Brandon Strassbaugh and his dad Dwayne of Palm City were two of the hundreds who enjoyed the excellent Spanish mackerel fishing Sunday south of St. Lucie Inlet. A new school of fish has moved in and they are larger. Brandon caught several on a fly that resembles a minnow. Then, while catching a few for dinner, the Strassbaughs noticed a school of large 30-pound class jack crevalles eating the mackerel. They tossed MirroLures and Dwayne fought one for 45 minutes before releasing it.
LAKE OKEECHOBEE
Catching a limit of specks is a possibility for anglers who are eager to get a few for dinner. The best bite has been late in the day until midnight. Anglers fishing from pontoon boats can make a comfortable night of it. The mouth of the Kissimmee River is still a mainstay spot among anglers. The fish will strike best on live minnows fished on jigs in 10-12 feet of water. The fish will be 3-4 feet from the surface. Bass fishing is a challenge. The FLW Series will fish Wednesday through Saturday out of Clewiston.
