FRENCHMAN LAKE: Fishing has been good here. The boat landings have been the favorite spots. On Saturday, Corey Davis from Sparks caught three rainbows in the 14-18-inch range and weighing 11/2 to 2 pounds each. He was fishing at Lunker Point and using nightcrawlers. Other fishermen also are reporting limits. The weather has been cool, but sunny. Call ahead to check conditions. Wiggin's Trading Post, 530-993-4683.
PYRAMID LAKE: Fly-fishing has really picked up in the past week. There was a report of an angler catching a 10-pound and an 11-pound cutthroat in one day last week. The South side of the lake has been producing numbers. Reports of 10-20 fish days. Fish are in shallow water. Slow-stripping midnight cowboys and olive martini's with a northern lights tadpole dropper has been working well. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
TRUCKEE RIVER: The river is fishing really well in both Nevada and California. On the Nevada side, the river is in great shape from the stateline to Derby Dam. There have been some really nice fish taken on nymphs and streamers in the past two months. The fish are holding in deeper, slower pools, as they do for most of the winter months. Dead-drifting small nymphs such as Bottom Rollers and Pheasant Tails in sizes 14 to 18. It is important to get your flies near the bottom with no drag. The California side is really low from Lake Tahoe to Boca Bridge. The best fishing is below that point. The best fishing times are between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the water is the warmest. Flows are: Town of Truckee 20 c.f.s., Boca Bridge 238 c.f.s., Reno 239 c.f.s.
EAGLE LAKE: Fishing is picking up here. The season closes Dec. 31. This is usually the time of year that Eagle Lake is famous for (if you can take the cold). Rust-colored Wooly buggers and Leaches fished in 4-8-feet of water with a type two sinking line are the way to go. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: Flows are 141 c.f.s. The Little Truckee is up because of the lack of water coming out of Lake Tahoe. This is great news for the fishing at the Little Truckee short term. The fish have had enough water to cruise up the river from Boca all fall. There are quite a few big Browns and Rainbows in the river and they can be caught with a variety of methods. There have been numerous fish bigger than 20 inches caught in the past few weeks. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
EAST WALKER RIVER: Flows are down to 29 c.f.s. This is typical for this time of year. The fishing has been outstanding as of late. Ice will start to be an issue in the weeks to come, but it is not yet. One of Reno Fly Shop's guides, Chris Evison, had a client catch and release 17 fish last weekend. Nymphing with size 16-20 nymphs under an indicator has been working well. There has been some sporadic dry fly fishing in the afternoons as well. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.
LAKE DAVIS: Fishing results are spotty as water temperatures hover near the 45-degree mark. The average size fish being landed is 17-18 inches. Limits to near limits have been reported from shore-fishermen at Fairview. Nightcrawlers and Powerbait have been the baits of choice. Fly-fishermen have been garnering mixed results at Jenkins on the west shore and at Mosquito Slough at the northeast area of the lake. Nymphs and variations of woolly buggers are effective patterns. Two presentations have been successful for those trolling. Cinnamon-colored flies trolled 3-6-feet deep works at times and other times a fire tiger needle fish presented 10-12-feet under the surface has been effective. The boat dock at Honker cove remains in the water.
