INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
It's a weekend of transition for anglers on the Treasure Coast. First, spotted seatrout season is closed beginning Saturday until Jan. 1. All spotted seatrout must be released unharmed until the new year. Saturday night is time to turn back the clocks one hour for eastern standard time. Capt. Gary Rhinehart of Professional Outfitters in Vero Beach said there have been a few big flounder caught at Sebastian Inlet the past few days. There has also been good redfishing along the western bank of he Indian River Lagoon between Vero Beach and Fort Pierce.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY
Capt. Wayne Bushnell, of Lady Stuart II out of Harbortown Marina in Fort Pierce, had a good fishing report from Wednesday's trip. Anglers brought in grouper, mutton snapper, mangrove snapper, lane snapper, trigger fish and plenty of good-size sea bass. Capt. Joe Ward, of Capt. Joe's River charters in Fort Pierce, said afternoon fishing was productive following the cold mornings of the past week. Trout were caught in Middle Cove in 3-5 feet of water on soft plastic baits.
MARTIN COUNTY
Capt. Greg Scherer, of Bridge Tender Guide Service out of Billy Bones Bait and Tackle in Port St. Lucie, fished with his son Zachary Scherer, 13, and friend Tyler Azbel, 11. The duo caught eight snook led by Azbel's 31 and 32-inch fish, jacks and a 35-inch tarpon for Zach. They fished the Roosevelt Bridge in 76-degree water. Wednesday's trip with Jimmy Helms and Fred Roberts yielded 32 croaker — 15 to 22 inches — on shrimp while fishing the submerged cable crossing at the east end of the Evans Crary Bridge in 66-68 degree water.
LAKE OKEECHOBEE
Bass fishing will be at its best in the grass near shore from King's Bar near Buckhead Ridge to Fisheating Bay near Lakeport. Buzzbaits, spinner baits and artificial frogs are the lures to use. The Kissimmee River also has a few spots worth trying if fishing with shiners. Set up on the edges of shoals and drop-offs for the best chances. Bluegills can still be caught in the Rim Canal near Taylor Creek, at Nubbin Slough and near Henry Creek. Use live crickets.
