Central Lake Erie
The night walleye bite around Cleveland and Lorain is slowly picking up, but the wind and weather must cooperate. When Lake Erie has settled down, the yellow perch fishing has lit up all along the shoreline from Huron to Conneaut, and especially in 45-46 feet of water off Cleveland Browns Stadium. The best perch fishing off East 72nd Street has been in 38 to 40 feet of water, and in 40 feet of water off Bratenahl.
The night bite for walleye off Cleveland has been sporadic, but the walleye fishing off Vermilion and Huron has been very good. Some schools have been reported in 19 to 29 feet of water off Vermilion's Sherrod Park and Ruggles Beach, with walleye also being caught from schools five and 10 miles north of Vermilion and Huron.
The perch fishing in 40 to 42 feet of water northwest of the mouth of the Grand River has been very good.
Western Lake Erie
The walleye fishing has been just fair around the Western Basin, with some fish being caught along the drop-offs of Kelleys Island Shoal and Gull Shoal on weight-forward spinners tipped with nightcrawlers. Anglers are trolling the deeper waters around the reefs with limited success.
The yellow perch fishing continues to be good around Green and Rattlesnake islands, the Marblehead Lighthouse and off the Cedar Point buoy. Perch also are being caught in the deeper water east of Kelleys Island Shoal and west of Catawba Island.
Rivers and streams
Recent rains brought a surge of steelhead trout up the rivers, but the rivers are now low and clear and the trout are trapped in the deeper pools and very wary. Trout are hitting spinners and spoons, as well as spawn bags and jig-maggot combinations worked through the pools under a float.
Inland Lakes
The cooling lake temperatures are bringing largemouth bass, crappies and bluegills closer to shore. Jig-minnow offerings worked under a float are taking crappies and jig-maggot combos are taking bluegills.
The fall muskie season should be heating up at Leesville Lake, with anglers also targeting muskies at Pymatuning, West Branch and Berlin reservoirs and Lake Milton.
The cool weather has helped the walleye fishing at Pymatuning Reservoir, with jigs tipped with twister tails a good combination under the causeway bridge. Surprising catches of yellow perch up to 10 inches are reported at Pymatuning, where anglers have to watch out for waterfowl hunters. Bluegills and crappies are being caught along the causeway.
