Central Lake Erie

Lake Erie was very bumpy again on Thursday, but when the lake has been calm the yellow perch fishing has been good to excellent. Cleveland fishermen had very good success last weekend in 45 to 55 feet of water.

The best walleye action has been about 7 miles north of Cranberry Creek and Vermilion, with walleye in the top 12 feet of water. Lure selection has been dominated by minnow style plugs, especially trolling Reef Runner diving plugs in the "Pink Lemonade" and "Cranberry Crusher" colors. The walleye fishing in the area should be good until the winter weather chases anglers away.

The night bite for walleye has been slow, but should heat up in the coming days for anglers casting for shore from the piers and breakwalls. The hot spots range from Cleveland's breakwalls to the Huron and Lakeside piers.

Western Lake Erie

Yellow perch are biting all around the western end of Lake Erie, but the walleye fishing has been slow. The best spots have been around Gull Shoal and Kelleys Island Shoal. Perch are still being caught around Green and Rattlesnake islands and off the Marblehead Lighthouse and the Cedar Point buoy.

Inland lakes

Bluegills and crappies are moving to shallower waters as lake temperatures drop below 60 degrees. Fish jig-minnows and jig-maggots under a float around the inside edges of the weed beds.

The largemouth bass fishing has been slow. A crowd of tournament boats this weekend for Sunday's Central Basin Bass Annual Benefit Tournament will put pressure on the Portage Lakes. Bass have been scattered.

A few walleye are being caught from the Mosquito Lake weed beds on jig-minnow combinations. Wading and casting for walleye should begin soon. Small perch are plentiful at Mosquito, and so are crappies, though many crappies are small.

Muskie fishermen are targeting the fall bite at Pymatuning Reservoir with Jointed Creek Chub lures and Mepps Musky Killer spinners. Turtle Point has been a good location for muskies. Walleye fishermen are catching a few fish trolling Shad Raps and Hot-N-Tots, with some casting blade baits around the Pennsylvania bridge after dark.

Rivers and streams

The local Lake Erie tributaries are high and muddy after this week's rains, which should lure big numbers of steelhead trout up the streams. Look for a few of the rivers to become fishable late in the weekend or early next week. The best bet will be drifting spawn bags and jig-maggot combos under a float through the deeper pools.

The Rocky River should come on line by late weekend, with the Vermilion and Chagrin rivers expected to begin clearing on Monday or Tuesday if the rain stays away.
